This policy does not apply to Registered Massage Therapist or Regulated Manual Osteopathic Therapist members. In those cases where a member is a registered member of the Regulatory College in the jurisdiction in which they practice, those members are responsible to adhere to the standards of practice set by the regulatory body within those jurisdictions.
Purpose:
• To provide clarification for members on how and when they may treat a romantic partner. CMMOTA strictly prohibits the treatment of romantic partners regardless of location.
Policy:
1. A romantic partner is defined as a person who is involved in either a dating or sexual relationship with a therapist but does not include a person defined as a spouse in CMMOTA’s Treatment of Spouse Policy.
2. The treatment of a romantic partner is not allowed under any circumstances.
3. A romantic or sexual relationship with a former client may not be pursued or entered into by a therapist until a twelve (12) month period has passed following termination/discharge of the professional relationship.
4. Reported non-compliance with this policy would result in disciplinary action through the CMMOTA’s Discipline for Complaints Policy.
