Keeping Up with Membership Requirements

As a member of CMMOTA, it’s crucial to stay on top of the membership requirements. These requirements include keeping your Standard (Intermediate) First Aid and Level “C” CPR certification up to date, keeping your Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) information current, and to provide new VSC information to the association prior to the 3-year anniversary of your previous check (or more frequently if practicing in Nova Scotia). Additionally, it also includes making sure that you pay your membership and insurance renewal fees before the deadline, as well as ensuring you meet the Credit and AGM attendance requirement in each cycle.. Failure to meet any of these membership requirements will result in membership suspension – but what exactly does suspension entail?

Understanding Membership Suspension

If you are suspended it means a couple of things – Firstly, it signifies that you are no longer considered to be in good standing with the Association. Second, it prohibits you from using your CMMOTA membership number for billing purposes. When a member is suspended, the Administration is obligated to alert third parties of the suspension as necessary, including health insurance companies.

Typically, suspended members have five business days to fulfill the requirements. However, if the situation remains unresolved within this timeframe, the suspended member’s number is permanently retired, and third parties are informed of the suspension. Consequently, any third-party billing may be rejected, and receipts issued by you after your suspension date may not be honored by the various insurers. It will mean that even if you are able to meet your membership requirements before membership cancellation kicks in, that your CMMOTA Membership Number will change, and if you have had to change your number before, you can understand the headache this can be (new stamps, updating direct billing information, new membership certificates… just as a couple of examples).
