Indian head massage, as the name indicates, originated from India. This now amplified traditional treatment (to meet the needs of today’s client) is immensely popular amongst Western cultures. This is due to its simplicity and portability, which allows it to be utilized almost anywhere and everywhere, making relaxation and holistic wellness even more accessible for everyone.

What is an Indian Head Massage?

Indian head massage, also known as Champissage™, is a treatment that focuses on the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, head, face, and ears. It uses a variety of friction and other unique moves to induce relaxation as well as to address several common stress-related issues: headaches, migraines, hair loss, insomnia, sinusitis, eye strain, tinnitus, upper back, neck, and head stiffness and tightness, just to name a few.

This treatment originates from an East Indian alternative medicine system known as Ayurveda, (translated as the ‘science of life’). It is believed that the mind and body are intricately connected and thus can influence one another. Through this theory, it is understood that Indian head massage can not only reduce headaches and improve physical well-being, but it can also improve mental and emotional wellness too.

Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic practice that has been used in India for centuries and requires no special equipment making it a very accessible treatment and perfect for newcomers to massage. It is usually done while seated on an armless chair and through light clothing.

Spa Champissage™ can also be offered by spas. This is done by enhancing this treatment with a few extras. This is all further detailed in class.

This treatment is both affordable to take and to offer. The ROI after the practicums is 10 treatments or less depending on what is charged for the service. Treatment fees range from $75 to $125.

This treatment is not fully transferable to the massage table but some aspects can be extrapolated and integrated into a standard table massage. This treatment makes for a nice stand alone treatment but can be offered as 30 minute add-on to a 60 minute massage treatment.
