It’s about that time of year again where we are often asked these two questions “Can I provide a receipt to my client when they purchase a gift card?” and “How can I protect my membership number against fraud?”. Don’t fret!! We are here to help!!
With regards to gift certificates and receipts, you as a therapist, when a customer comes in you would only provide a receipt to the purchaser stating they purchased a G/C, they are not eligible to submit that to their insurance company for reimbursement since a service was not provided at the time of purchase. When the client who received the G/C pays for a treatment with the G/C, they also do not receive a receipt since they did not originally pay for that service. In other words, you would not issue a treatment receipt for either person in the purchase and use of the gift card.
Fraud can be a very scary word, but we believe that education and awareness can absolutely help to protect you. There are many ways that you as a Massage Therapist or Manual Osteopathic Therapist can help to protect yourself, your business and your membership billing number.
